The Elegant Le Corbusier Chaiselounge LC4 by Le Corbusier

[Untitled]

Le Corbusier is commonly remembered for his priceless contributions to the field of architecture, but anyone who knows the history of modern furniture design can tell you that he was also an accomplished furniture designer. And one of the several furniture designs he has made during his career is the so-called Le Corbusier Chaiselounge LC4.

One of his more popular furniture designs, the Le Corbusier Chaiselounge LC4 is a modernist re-make of the classic French chaise longue or long chair design. It was designed by Le Corbusier in 1928 in collaboration with his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, and French designer Charlotte Perriand. The prototype of the LC4 Chaiselounge was first used in the Villa Church in Paris and was later put on display at the 1929 Salon d’ Automne art exhibition under the installation Equipment for the Home.

In line with the minimalist tradition of modern furniture, the Le Corbusier Chaiselounge LC4 can be split up into three basic parts: the independent support base, the curved steel cradle at the center, and the combination seat and backrest with a matching cylindrical headrest on top. The base of the Chaiselounge is made from welded steel coated with black matte enamel, and fitted with plastic tips at the ends to prevent scratches. The central cradle is made from the same steel as the base, but is coated with either chrome plating or black enamel finish. The cradle is also curved to allow the seat to adjust or recline against the independent support frame easily. The cushions, on the other hand, are covered with either black leather, brown ponyskin, or a special beige canvas.

The LC4 Chaiselounge first went into production in the 1930s up to the 1950s where it was reintroduced with several minor modifications. Today, the Le Corbusier Chaiselounge is manufactured by Cassina S.p.A of Milan under license from the Fondation le Corbusier.
